Updated: Oct 29

From my experience, money and sex are the two topics that everyone is REALLY interested in, but also really confused about. Why is that?!

Sexual health is such an important factor in our overall health. In case you still need convincing, a healthy sex life can help women lower blood pressure, improve immunity, improve self esteem, relieve pain, and sleep better, according to OHSU Center for Women's Health. Orgasms are also EXTREMELY good for us- they help you live longer, they release anti-aging hormones, improve mood, decrease stress, and can even boost fertility when you have them regularly.

Sex has always been a taboo topic, but especially for women. Many women experience a lot of shame around sexual desire, sexual pleasure and many women have trouble reaching orgasm (81% of women cannot orgasm from sexual intercourse alone, according to the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy).

Whether your issue is "getting in the mood" or "finishing the job" (or both), I've got you covered, sis. Read on for my top holistic ways to boost sex drive so you can have all the amazing sexual pleasure that you DESERVE (whether you are solo or with a partner).

Things that hinder women's libido

Woman Stressed

Before we dive into the things that can help your sex drive, it's important to note some of the things that can hurt it.

1. The birth control pill

It seems counterintuitive that something you take so that you can have MORE sex would actually make you want to do it LESS, but it's true. Learn more here.

2. Alcohol

Again, this might seem strange because alcohol lowers inhibitions and might initially make you more horny, but hear me out- in the long run, alcohol can mess with your hormones and also make your lady parts less lubricated.

3. Dehydration

Simply put, you want to keep your WHOLE body very well hydrated to keep things, ahem, wet.

4. Stress

Your body simply cannot desire sex if you are stressed. No matter how badly you desire sex, your body won't cooperate if it's in fight-or-flight mode. Take care of your mental health and make space for a daily mindfulness practice.

Fruits, nuts and Salmon

Okay, now that we know the things that HURT your sex drive, let's talk about some ways to naturally increase sex drive for women.

1. Diet

Eating a whole-foods diet that is low in processed sugars and junk food will balance your hormones & make a HUGE difference in your sex drive. Additionally, there are certain foods you can eat that will maximize your libido, including:

  • Dark chocolate

  • Pumpkin seeds

  • Garlic

  • Oysters

  • Pineapple

  • Celery

  • Ginger

  • Spinach

  • Pomegranate

  • Avocado

2. Herbal supplements

Some of my favorite herbs/supplements for boosting women's libido include:

  • Maca root- a Peruvian superfood that I personally take daily (read more about it in this article I wrote)

  • Ginseng- an apoptogenic herb

  • Ashwagandha

3. Self-pleasure

Masturbation is still considered a taboo topic in our culture (especially for women), but nothing will help foster a healthy libido more easily than self pleasure.

Understanding your own anatomy + knowing what you like/don't like is empowering & leads to a more satisfactory sex life. Consider experimenting with different tools (I'm a big fan of the crystal pleasure wands from Yoni Pleasure Palace.

4. Pelvic floor exercises

Regularly strengthening your pelvic floor can not only improve your overall sexual experience but they strengthen the muscles under the uterus, bladder, and large intestine. Strengthening these muscles can lead to increased sexual satisfaction and even more intense orgasms (WOOHOO!). You can simply strengthen your pelvic floor by doing kegels (I just did one as a typed this) or you can use a tool like a yoni egg to take this practice deeper. (I've been using a yoni egg for years as part of my physical and spiritual practice of connecting deeper with my womb space. Learn more about yoni eggs here.
