1. Urban Harvest Farmers Market (My Favorite!)

If you only visit one farmers market in Houston, make it Urban Harvest.

This producer-only market is one of the largest in Texas, meaning you're buying directly from the people who grow, raise, or make the products they sell. There are more than 100 vendors offering everything from seasonal produce and pasture-raised meats to fresh seafood, local coffee, flowers, sourdough bread, mushrooms, eggs, fermented foods, and handmade pantry staples. Vendors come from within approximately 180 miles of Houston, making it one of the best places to shop local. Urban Harvest Farmers Market has the most produce vendors, so it's the best place to go if you want to stock up on locally grown produce.

I love that every visit feels a little different depending on what's in season. It's also one of the easiest ways to support Houston-area farms while filling your kitchen with incredibly fresh ingredients. My favorite time of year to visit Urban Harvest is in the fall, because they have the most vendors and so many delicious fall selections!

2. Heights Mercantile Farmers Market

Located in one of Houston's most walkable neighborhoods, the Heights Mercantile Farmers Market combines local food with boutique shopping and great restaurants.

You'll find a curated collection of local vendors selling produce, flowers, meats, cheese, kombucha, baked goods, artisan foods, and handmade products. After shopping, it's easy to grab brunch or browse the surrounding shops, making this one of my favorite Sunday activities in Houston.

Not to be confused with the weekend farmers markets above, the historic Houston Farmers Market has been serving Houstonians for decades.

Tips for Visiting Houston Farmers Markets

To make the most of your visit:

• Arrive early for the best selection (seriously- a lot of the popular vendors run out of their top items in the first hour or two!!)

• Bring reusable shopping bags.

• Bring a cooler if you're buying meat, dairy, or eggs during the summer.

• Talk with the farmers—they're usually happy to answer questions about how their food is grown. (many don't have the "organic" label, because it's expensive and cumbersome to get. But if you talk with them, you'll find many of them use organic practices).

• Shop seasonally. Houston's markets are constantly changing based on what's growing locally. Come with an open mind and prepare to be inspired to try new dishes!

• Most vendors take credit cards, but a few are cash-only. Bring some cash just in case!
